The GCC has updated the publications page on the website with three operational annual reports, highlighting the operational activity of the GCC in 2023:
The three reports published are:

  1. Registration report - the registration report includes statistics and insight about all the individuals on the registrant report, as well as trends in the joiners and leavers to the register
  2. Test of Competence Report - the ToC report discusses the number of chiropractors who have qualified abroad and have taken the Test of Competence (ToC) before an expert panel, to practice in the UK.
  3. The Fitness to Practise report - highlights the investigation and enforcement actions taken by the GCC in 2023.

To highlight some of the interesting information in these reports we are asking you to test your skill and judgement on the GCC operational annual report quick quiz:

Question 1

In 2023, 349 students graduated from an approved degree courses in chiropractic at AECC, LSBU, MCC or WIOC (Teeside will see their first graduates in 2024).

By 12 February 2024, how many of these students had registered with the GCC to practise in the UK?

A) 265 B) 245 C) 225

The answer is A.

By 12 February 2024, 265 that had graduated from a UK approved degree courses in chiropractic had registered with the GCC. We measure to the date in February as some courses complete in December and the students on these courses tend not to register immediately.

Question 2

In 2023, 293 registrants joined the register and 142 were removed for various reasons.

Of those that left the register, how many were removed for failing to complete their CPD requirements?

A) 83 B) 39 C) 16

The answer is B.

During 2023, 39 people left the register due to failure to complete their CPD requirements.

Question 3

In 2023, 38 applicants took the Test of Competence to practise in the UK. This requires them to demonstrate to an expert panel that are fit to practice in the UK.

For the first time this year a TOC applicant had studied at a Latin American university - but in which country?

A) Peru B) Mexico C) Brazil

The answer is B.

One TOC candidate had completed their chiropractic degree in Mexico - the first candidate from a Latin American country.

Question 4

In 2023, there were 11 cases determined by the Professional Conduct Committee (the second stage of the process once the Investigating Committee has decided that there is a case to answer).

How many registrants were found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct in 2023?

A) Five B) Six C) Nine

The answer is A.

Five chiropractors were found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct in 2023. In the other six cases the chiropractor was found not guilty of unprofessional conduct.

The admonishments issued to the five were as follows:

  • In April 2023 a registrant was issued with a conditions of practice order.
  • In June 2023 a registrant was issued with a suspension from the register.
  • In July 2023 a registrant was issued with a conditions of practice order.
  • In August 2023 a registrant was ordered to be removed from the register.
  • In November 2023 a registrant was issued with an admonishment.
