Chiropractors and clinics with on-site X-ray imaging equipment (or other sources of ionising radiation) must register their equipment with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). This is a requirment of the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 (IRR17) aimed at ensuring the safety of staff and members of the public (and separate to the regulations concerned with the safety of patients (IR(ME)R17)).

As a result of recomendations made by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the HSE has updated their portal for registering equipment, and they are now requesting further information that they did not previously require. If you hold a registration granted before 1 October 2023, you will be asked to provide further information.

You do not need to do anything until the HSE contacts you, and your existing registration will continue to apply - however you are advised to be aware of the change and keep an eye out for contact (via email) from the HSE.

The HSE will contact you before April 2024 and require you to provide additional information about the extent and purpose of your work including information on the number and location of radiation generators through the new RADAN (Radiation Authorisation & Notifications) portal.

RADAN is a new digital platform that replaced BSSD from October 2nd, 2023. Any users registered with BSSD now need to create a new account and re-register through RADAN. Details of how to do this and the information you’ll need to let us know can be found in the Guidance Notes on the HSE website.

We advise that you check your inbox and junk email directories for this email and respond promptly to it when received as it is a legal requirement to complete.
