The GCC has developed a new toolkit to support discussions with patients around consent. Obtaining informed consent for all aspects of patient care is a critical part of chiropractic treatment, as outlined in The Code, and demonstrates that a patient has sufficient understanding of their treatment options and is happy to proceed.
The ‘Supporting Informed Consent’ toolkit provides tips and guidance to help registrants obtain informed consent and encourage shared decision making with patients. For example, by providing a broad range of information which is tailored to meet a patient’s specific needs.
The toolkit can be used to support registrants as they consider “consent” as part of the mandatory Continuous Professional Development (CPD) reflection in the 2022/2023 CPD year.
The development of the toolkit follows discussions with the GCC’s Patient Community around their understanding and expectations of informed consent when visiting a chiropractor. The full patient research report was published last month.
